Sports Theme Decorating

Decorating is a blast!  You want kids to be excited about coming to church.  Creating a cool theme environment hammers away at the notion that "church is boring"!  With a great theme, you'll cause children to be more comfortable at your church and eager to come back after Vacation Bible School is over.

Classrooms

Since the 2008 theme covers a variety of sports, why not give each classroom an individual sports theme?!  To give your classrooms a fun football, baseball, or soccer "locker room" atmosphere, try some of these ideas:

Start with the walls - rows of lockers can easily be created with gray or silver craft paper and paint.  Build a couple of simple locker benches out of plywood.  Cut out pictures of sports stars from magazines and display them on walls, "lockers" and/or bulletin boards.  Don't forget this CHAMPION BASEBALL MYLAR BALLOON to brighten up any environment!

*Baseball Room

Design your own pennants and hang on your "lockers" and other walls.  Leave laundry baskets, towels, and empty shampoo bottles throughout the room.

Hang a few inflatable 14" baseballs from the ceiling.  A Baseball Star banner would look perfect above the door, welcoming your kids as they arrive, or inside the room on a wall. 

Leave baseball hats throughout the room (Give them away as prizes at the end of the week).

Mark off a baseball diamond in the middle of your room to use for activities or just as decoration.

*Football Room

Use white tape to mark off your carpet like a football field.  Add a Football Star banner to your wall or over your door. 

Lay out these TISSUE GRASS MATS 18X30 GREEN on the floor for a fun "turf" look.  Collect football helmets, pads, and jerseys and display them throughout the room.

*Basketball Room

With white tape, turn your carpet into a basketball court.  Hang a BASKETBALL MEMORIES BANNER on your wall surrounded by posters or magazine cutouts of basketball players. 

Create a giant basketball goal with a hula hoop as the rim and crepe paper streamers to make the net.  Let your kids take shots at the goal as a reward or just for fun.

Put up white craft paper about three feet from the floor on each wall, surrounding the room.  Draw faces and stick figures to give the appearance of a crowd watching your class on the arena floor!

*Soccer Room

A Soccer Star Custom Banner will welcome kids as they enter your room.  Create a soccer field with these TISSUE GRASS MATS 18X30 GREEN .  Build the frame of a soccer goal from PVC pipe and this FISHNET BLUE to complete it. 

Hallways

Make walking down your hallways an uplifting experience!  Create colorful banners to display on the walls that shout phrases like, "You're Special!", "God Loves You!", "You Can Do It!", "You're A Winner!".

Snack & Craft Rooms

For your craft "fan zone", cover your tables with Grass Field Tablecovers.  Place on the walls or hanging from the ceiling some giant 24" Inflatable Footballs.  

Create your own pennants out of posterboard.  They make perfect decorations and crafts.  After your kids finish them, hang them on the wall until the end of VBS.  Add a Football Mini Bowls to decorate each table.

Missions Room

This World Map is perfect if you have a room dedicated to missions year-round or want to make an impact on your kids for the week of VBS.  It's a huge 9' x 13' map that will help you teach what God is doing throughout the world.  Use it as you lead children to pray for the unreached.

These World Flags will make them more aware of the Church in other nations and encourage your kids to make a difference for Christ all over the world.

Music Room

Sanctuary/Worship Center

This room is where the big stuff goes!  At the center of the stage, create a large eye-catching centerpiece.  Try one of these ideas:

Out of plywood, create a giant goal post 12-20 feet tall and paint it yellow.  Be sure that it's braced well.  Make a huge football 5-6 feet out of paper mache or a lightweight material and hang it so it's positioned in the middle of the goal post.  You shouldn't have any problems finding volunteers to craft this cool display!

Buy a large canvas drop cloth and paint your VBS logo on it.  To add your logo, attach the drop cloth to a wall, trace your logo from a transparency on an overhead machine set at the appropriate distance.  After you've traced the logo, paint it with an oil or water based paint.

Also:

*Hang sports pennants and posters on the walls.

*Use your local high school or college team's colors in your decorating.

*Decorate BIG with some of the large stage props from Shindigz.
